The Port of Morgan City Bringing Tax Dollars Back To The Local Community
The Morgan City Harbor & Terminal District seeks state and federal grants and funding programs that bring tax dollars back to the local community. From 2009 through 2024 the Port brought $77 million in projects back to the Port Community, while providing a required match of $12.8 million.
Funding by the Department of Homeland Security / FEMA, the State of Louisiana, U S Department of Transportation / US Maritime Administration, US Economic Development Authority, and Community Project funds through the Louisiana Delegation enabled the Port to:
Promote economic development: Improved and expanded rail, dock and lay down areas to assist in the movement of goods
Support emergency preparedness
The Port of Morgan City Governmental Emergency Operations Center & Administrative Offices were activated during the Atchafalaya River flood fight in early 2016 . This $9.5 million 30,000 SQ FT, storm hardened Category 5 building was made possible by $7 million in Capital Outlay funding and Port of Morgan City funds.The Morgan City Harbor & Terminal District Governmental Emergency Operations Center and Administrative Offices were activated during the Atchafalaya River flood fight in early 2016. During emergencies St. Mary Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, the U. S. Coast Guard, St. Mary Levee District, the Corps of Engineers, and National Guard Coordinate Activities from this building.
During non-emergency times the building is used for training and meetings hosted by local, state and federal governmental agencies.
The EOC is not equipped to serve as an evacuation shelter for the general public
US Coast Guard-MSU Morgan City,Vessel Traffic Services Berwick Bay, St Mary Levee District, and St. Mary Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness are housed at the Ports EOC.
Enhance safety and security in the district through projects
* construct two
NOAA PORTS (Physical Oceanograpic Real-Time System) towers in the Atchafalaya Channel that provide real time environmental observations, forecasts and other geospatial information
* purchase and install an intrusion detection system and electronic monitoring equipment for the marine terminal facility and the Port’s Emergency Operations Center
